World Cup 2026 World Cup: Appoint a world-class coach for Black Stars – Dr Nyaho Tamakloe tells GFA, govt

Former Ghana Football Association (GFA) chairman, Dr Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe, has called on the government to act decisively in appointing a high-calibre coach to steer the Black Stars ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

His comments come in the wake of the dismissal of Otto Addo, following Ghana’s disappointing 2-1 defeat to Germany in Stuttgart, a result that intensified concerns about the team’s form.

The setback was compounded by a heavy 5-1 loss to Austria in Vienna just days earlier.

With Ghana’s World Cup campaign fast approaching, the veteran administrator stressed the need for urgency and quality in the selection process, insisting that only a coach with proven credentials and the ability to make an immediate impact should be considered.

“If the government has the money, they should pay well and go for a top-class coach,” Dr Nyaho Tamakloe told Graphic Sports, underlining the reality that elite expertise comes at a premium.

“Some coaches have the ability to turn teams around quickly," he added.

However, he firmly cautioned against the potential reappointment of former Black Stars coach Kwasi Appiah, whose name has surfaced in discussions, arguing that past circumstances should rule out any return.

In the meantime, speculation continues to link high-profile names such as 2014 World Cup-winning coach Joachim Löw and South African tactician Pitso Mosimane to the vacant position.

The Ghana Football Association is expected to name a new head coach in the coming days, with the Black Stars scheduled to regroup in May for friendly matches against Mexico and Wales as part of their final preparations.

Ghana has been drawn in Group L for the 2026 World Cup, where they will face Panama, England and Croatia.
