Former Nsoatreman FC General Manager Eric Alagidede has issued a stark warning that Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko risk losing their prominence over the next two decades unless urgent reforms are implemented.
The country’s two most celebrated clubs have struggled in recent years to consistently attract large crowds to their matches.
Hearts of Oak currently sit third on the Ghana Premier League table with 40 points, just two ahead of fourth-placed Kotoko.
Alagidede highlighted the decline of several traditional clubs in Ghana’s top flight as a worrying trend.
"I am not going to be the prophet of doom but if we are not careful, clubs like Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko may not be relevant in the next 20 to 30 years,” he said in an interview with Sporty FM.
He pointed to other historic teams now outside the top division, saying, "I am being very honest. [Traditional clubs like] BA United is playing in Division Two, Bofoakwa Tano in Division Two, Hasaacas in Division Two.
"I have done a lot of work on traditional clubs," he added.
As both sides look ahead, Asante Kotoko will host Vision FC, while Hearts of Oak travel to face second-placed Bibiani GoldStars in the Matchday 24 fixtures this weekend.
