Black Stars technical advisor Winfred Schafer has singled out Hearts of Oak goalkeeper Benjamin Asare as the standout player in the Ghana Premier League.
Asare, who joined Hearts of Oak ahead of the 2023/24 season, earned his first call-up to the Black Stars in March 2025, making an impressive debut in a 5-0 win over Chad, where he kept a clean sheet.
“Over the past two months. I have been visiting league venues and speaking with coaches and players. The best player I have seen is Benjamin Asare, and he is the Black Stars’ first-choice goalkeeper,” Schafer told Medeama FM.
He also urged locally-based players to raise their standards if they hope to earn a national team spot.
“The heart of football in Ghana is in the local league, not only with players in Europe. I urge all players to work hard if they want to earn a call-up into the Black Stars,” he added.
Asare’s contributions have been key to Hearts of Oak’s strong form, helping the team remain unbeaten in January and secure third place on the league table.
His three clean sheets in as many matches have also earned him a nomination for the Premier League Goalkeeper of the Month Award for January.
