Toulouse FC midfielder Abu Francis faces a long road to recovery after suffering a serious ankle injury that could rule him out of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The 25-year-old, representing the Black Stars, was injured during Ghana’s 2-0 defeat to Japan in the 2025 Kirin Challenge Cup at Toyota Stadium on Friday.
In an attempt to block a shot from Japan’s Ao Tanaka, Abu fractured his ankle, forcing him off the pitch.
Following the match, Toulouse issued a statement confirming the severity of the injury and casting doubt on his World Cup participation.
“After sustaining a terrible injury against the Japanese, our midfielder will be sidelined for several months and will, unfortunately, likely miss the 2026 World Cup in the United States…,” the club said.
Abu had just returned to the national team after missing the previous two call-ups, but was unable to complete the game on his comeback.
The Ghana Football Association (GFA) confirmed that he is in stable condition after receiving emergency treatment and is expected to return to France to begin his rehabilitation.
Meanwhile, the Black Stars have travelled to Seoul with a 21-man squad ahead of their final friendly against South Korea on Tuesday.
