Former Ghana international Michael Essien has signed a fresh two-year contract to continue as assistant coach at Danish club FC Nordsjælland.
With his current deal set to expire in the coming days, the club has opted to retain the 42-year-old former Chelsea and Real Madrid midfielder ahead of the upcoming season.
Essien initially joined Nordsjælland in a dual role as player-coach, but on September 9, 2020, the club officially announced his integration into the coaching setup. Since then, he has grown into a key member of the technical team.
Now a holder of the UEFA A coaching license, Essien has also completed a UEFA course focused on football management and organisation, further strengthening his credentials on the sidelines.
On the international stage, Essien earned 59 caps for Ghana, featuring at the 2006 and 2014 FIFA World Cups.
His illustrious club career saw him play for top sides including Bastia, Lyon, Chelsea, Real Madrid, AC Milan, Panathinaikos, Persib Bandung, and Sabail.
In 2024, he reportedly declined an offer to serve as assistant coach to Ghana national team boss Otto Addo, choosing instead to continue developing his coaching career in Denmark.
