Inter Allies Technical Director Willie Klutse confirms players involvement in match-fixing scandal against AshantiGold SC

Technical Director of Inter Allies, Willie Klutse, has confirmed that some players were directly involved in a fixed match against AshantiGold SC on the final day of the 2020/21 Ghana Premier League season.

Both clubs were subsequently relegated to Division Two, Ghana’s third-tier league, after being found guilty of manipulating the outcome of the game, which took place at the Obuasi Len Clay Stadium.

In an interview with Joy Sports, Klutse expressed his disappointment, stating, “I was not too worried, but I was disappointed that a group of players would use their future in gambling. The players went to gamble with their match."

According to Klutse, the players themselves admitted to placing bets on the match, even implicating the team manager.

“It’s the players who told us. They said, this one [player] bet, this one [player] bet,’ including our team manager. So we had to sack the whole team.

He emphasized that club administrators were not involved in the scandal.

“In the end, I went to the Disciplinary Committee meeting. We [the administrators] were not the cause, it’s the players.

Klutse also mentioned that the club reported the incident to the Nima Police Station but were advised to allow the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to handle the case, since it had already gained national attention.

"We reported the players to the Nima Police Station, and they said, once the thing is on national television, we should rather leave it to the GFA.”

Inter Allies now compete in the Division One League, having suffered the consequences of the scandal.
