Former Ghana assistant coach George Boateng has expressed his readiness to take on a head coaching role, citing his extensive coaching experience as a strong foundation for the next step in his career.
The 49-year-old, who transitioned into coaching after retiring from professional football, has built a diverse résumé over the years. His managerial journey began in 2014 when he took charge of Malaysian club Kelantan, later serving as the team’s technical director before departing in May 2015.
In 2018, Boateng had a brief spell as head coach of Blackburn Rovers before joining Aston Villa as their U-20 head coach in 2019. His expertise earned him a spot on Ghana’s national team staff in May 2022, where he contributed to the Black Stars’ successful qualification for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar and the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast.
Following a disappointing stint with Ghana, Boateng moved to Coventry City as an assistant coach in July 2024. However, his tenure ended in November of the same year after Frank Lampard was appointed head coach amid the club’s struggles.
Reflecting on his 12-year coaching career, Boateng now believes the time is right to step up as a head coach.
“I have done quite a lot of learning and developing myself as a coach. And now, I feel like I’m ready to be a head coach,” he told Soccer Africa.
The former midfielder has recently been linked with the vacant managerial position at Blackburn Rovers.
