Ibrahim Sannie Daara, the former Communications Director of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), has pointed to the frequent changes in the coaching staff as a major factor in the Black Stars' recent struggles.
Since Kurt Okraku took over the GFA, five different coaches have led the senior national team. CK Akonnor replaced Kwesi Appiah, but he was soon replaced by Milovan Rajevac. After a disappointing showing in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cameroon, Rajevac was dismissed, and Otto Addo was brought in on an interim basis for the World Cup playoffs against Nigeria.
Addo successfully led the team to qualification for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar but resigned after Ghana's early exit from the tournament. Chris Hughton, the team's technical advisor, then took over but was dismissed following a group-stage exit at the 2023 AFCON in Ivory Coast.
In March of this year, the GFA reappointed Otto Addo for a 34-month contract. However, despite this, the Black Stars are still struggling to find their form.
Daara, now a Senior CAF Media Officer, believes the constant turnover of coaches has negatively impacted the team's performance and undermined their confidence. He called for patience as Addo continues to build a new, young team.
"The Black Stars defeated Nigeria to qualify for the World Cup with a very young team, and if you look at the squad, we were very young so the momentum should have continued despite the elimination from the World Cup but we could not sustain the momentum," he told Asempa FM.
"I believe the frequent changes of coaches have not helped the team and it has affected the confidence of this team.
"The team now cannot perform well at tournaments and even play against minor sides. The technical team is now building a young team so we must exercise patience for this team," he added.
Currently, the Black Stars sit in 3rd place in Group F of the 2025 AFCON qualifiers with just two points from four matches. They will face Angola and Niger in the final round of qualification, with a trip to Luanda to play Angola on November 15, followed by a home fixture against Niger three days later.
