Ghanaian Winter Olympian Akwasi Frimpong, who resides in Utah, USA, participated in the historic celebration of Salt Lake City being chosen as the host for the 2034 Winter Olympic Games. The announcement was made yesterday in Park City, Utah.
In 2018, Frimpong made history as the first skeleton athlete from Ghana, Ghana's second Winter Olympian, and the first black male skeleton athlete in Olympic history.
He qualified for the 2018 Olympics through continental representation, being the sole male athlete from Africa.
Despite finishing last out of thirty competitors at the PyeongChang Games and last out of forty-four entrants at the 2017 IBSF World Championships, Frimpong achieved a significant milestone.
On February 29, 2020, he became the first skeleton athlete from Africa to win an elite skeleton race, sanctioned by the USA Bobsled and Skeleton Federation in Park City, Utah.
Frimpong is married to Erica Shields-Frimpong.
"Congratulations, Utah, and thank you for always embracing me like your own," he expressed.
