2023 African Games: Ghana’s 4x100m team finish first to secure final berth

Ghana made a triumphant mark at the ongoing 2023 African Games as both the men's and women's 4x100m relay teams secured spots in their respective heats finals.

In the Men’s 4x100m relay, the Ghanaian team clocked an impressive 38.67 seconds, clinching victory in Heat 3. Led by anchor leg runner Joseph Paul Amoah, the team, comprised of Edwin Gadayi, Solomon Hammond, and Benjamin Azamati, demonstrated impeccable teamwork to advance to the finals.

Following suit, the women’s team claimed victory in Heat 2 of the Women’s 4x100m relay, finishing in 44.24 seconds.

Led by Hor Halutie, Benedicta Kwartemaa, Mary Boakye, and Janet Mensah, the Ghanaian women outpaced their competitors, including Team South Africa, who finished with a time of 44.84 seconds.

Though Ghana's times were among the top in the heats, Liberia and Nigeria posted slightly faster times of 43.73 seconds and 43.91 seconds, respectively, setting the stage for an exciting showdown in the Women’s 4x100m race.

The victories in both categories mark a significant achievement for Ghana, especially amidst challenges faced in track events, including Benjamin Azamati's fifth-place finish in the 100m final.

Ghana's sole medal in Athletics so far came from Rose Yeboah's impressive 1.90m jump in the Women’s high jump event.
