Parliament expected to adjourn sine die on July 31

Parliament is expected to adjourn sine die on Thursday, July 31, bringing the Second Meeting of the Second Session of the Ninth Parliament to a close.

The Leader of Government Business and Majority Leader, Mahama Ayariga, announced the planned adjournment while presenting the Business Statement for the 11th week ending Friday, July 31.

He urged Members of Parliament to remain committed to the business scheduled for the final week before the House rises indefinitely.

Mr Ayariga also informed the House that the earlier decision for Parliament to sit on Saturday, July 25, had been withdrawn.

“The committee would like to notify honourable members that the House will no longer sit on the said Saturday,” he said.

The Second Meeting of the Second Session of the Ninth Parliament commenced on May 21, 2026.

Outlining the business for the week, the Majority Leader said three ministers would appear before Parliament to answer a total of 31 questions.

According to him, the Minister for Environment, Science and Technology is expected to respond to 10 questions, while the Ministers for Health and Energy will answer 10 and 11 questions respectively.

He noted that one of the questions has been classified as urgent, with the remaining 30 to be taken as oral questions.

Mr Ayariga further indicated that, in accordance with Order 91(2), ministers may also be permitted to make policy statements on behalf of the government during the week.

He added that several bills, papers and committee reports are expected to be presented to the House, including documents that may undergo first reading.

He explained that urgent bills could be taken through all stages in a single day in line with Order 160, while papers may be laid and committee reports presented under the provisions of Order 97.

The Majority Leader also called on parliamentary committees to use the upcoming recess to clear the backlog of referrals awaiting consideration.

He disclosed that 520 referrals are currently before 27 parliamentary committees for review and reporting.

Mr Ayariga further announced that debate on the 2026 Mid-Year Budget Review, presented to Parliament last Thursday by Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, will begin next Tuesday.

He said the debate will conclude on Thursday, July 30, with closing remarks expected from both the Majority and Minority Leaders.
