Ghana Football Association (GFA) Executive Council member Frederick Acheampong has taken a significant step towards realizing his parliamentary aspirations.
Over the weekend, he emerged as the winner in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary primary for the Ahafo Ano South East constituency, surpassing four other contenders.
Acheampong secured an impressive 164 votes, outperforming his closest competitor, Obeng Boateng, who garnered 88 votes. John Wesley Owusu Boateng claimed the third position with 82 votes, followed by Emmanuel Osei Boateng with 76 votes, and Roy Gyeabour Antwi, who received 29 votes.
This victory marks a pivotal moment in Acheampong's political journey, positioning him for a potential challenge against other candidates in the upcoming 2024 general elections. If successful, he will represent the Ahafo Ano South East constituency as a Member of Parliament.
However, Acheampong's path to parliament may come with its share of challenges. As a prominent figure in Ghanaian football, he must navigate the delicate balance between his roles on the GFA Executive Council and as a CAF official. Additionally, the rigors of campaigning for a parliamentary seat are expected to be demanding, requiring a considerable investment of time and energy.
Despite these hurdles, Acheampong remains undeterred, focusing on the opportunity to serve his country and contribute to its development. In a statement, he expressed gratitude to the delegates and NPP members in the Ahafo Ano South East constituency for their support, pledging to work tirelessly for victory in the upcoming elections.
Acheampong's success in the primary election has stirred excitement within the football community, with many extending their congratulations. However, his political ambitions have sparked debate, as some question how he will manage the dual responsibilities of football administration and parliamentary duties.
