The Tanzania Football Federation (TFF) has suspended their manager, Adel Amrouche, following comments he made criticizing Morocco's influence within the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
This action comes in response to a complaint filed by Morocco with CAF regarding Amrouche's remarks.
Amrouche had previously asserted that Morocco had undue influence in CAF, suggesting they could manipulate match scheduling and officiating. Subsequently, CAF imposed an eight-match ban on Amrouche after a disciplinary hearing.
In light of this decision, the TFF released a statement announcing Amrouche's suspension. Hemed Suleiman Ali has been appointed as the interim coach, with assistance from Juma Mgunda, for the remaining matches in Tanzania's 2023 Africa Cup of Nations campaign. The Taifa Stars, facing the absence of Amrouche, are gearing up for their second group game against Zambia on Sunday, aiming for a comeback after their 3-0 loss to Morocco in the opening match.
Amrouche, who played a pivotal role in Tanzania's qualification for the Afcon finals, had previously coached various African nations before taking charge of Tanzania in March 2023. Despite his controversial comments, he had attempted to backtrack, praising Morocco as "one of the best teams in the world" before their Afcon opener.
While the suspension has created a stir, TFF President Wallace Karia clarified that the organization does not endorse Amrouche's comments. In a video statement on Azam TV, Karia emphasized that Amrouche's views were personal opinions and did not reflect the stance of the TFF. He also reaffirmed the TFF's amicable relations with the Moroccan Football Federation.
