There lived one of the greatest ever footballers around the globe, known as Baba Yara, a Ghanaian winger.
Yara’s outstanding football agility got many loving him, but not in satisfaction as the once exquisite career ended abruptly.
After just eight years in the beautiful game, the Black Stars' top-scoring winger was shown the untimely exit from the pitch after sustaining a severe spinal injury in 1963 in a car accident.
March 2023 will be exactly 60 years since his untimely retirement.
About Baba Yara
The two-time Ghanaian footballer of the year was born on October 12, 1936, in Kumasi, the capital of Ghana’s Ashanti Region.
He was dubbed the "King of Wingers" due to his fantastic goal-scoring skill despite being a young winger.
Yara started out as a horse jockey player as a youngster at the Accra Turf Club between 1950 and 1955 before joining the one-time African club of the century, Kumasi Asante Kotoko, in 1955, becoming the most appreciated player of his generation.
He made his debut as a member of the Black Stars in 1955 in a match that saw Ghana put seven past Nigeria at the Accra Sports Stadium, netting two and assisting four of the goals.
He was also a member of the 1961 Black Stars and won 51 caps for the Black Stars, scoring 49 goals—a lot for a winger.
Unfortunately, he sustained a spinal injury in a motor accident at Kpeve in the Volta region on March 4, 1963, while his teams, Nkrumah’s Real Republikans, were returning to Accra after a league match against Volta Heroes at Kpandu, cutting his career short tragically in his prime at the age of just 26.
He was flown to Stoke Mandeville Hospital in the United Kingdom for three months of treatment the same year, but only returned in a wheelchair.

Baba Yara was bedridden for 6 years before dying quietly in a wheelchair on May 5, 1969, at the age of 33, at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital.
On April 12, 2005, Kumasi Sports Stadium was named after Baba Yara in recognition of his exceptional talent and immense contribution to Ghana football. With a seating capacity of over 40,000, the stadium is still Ghana's largest sports stadium.
