BEYOND THE WHITE COAT

They walk the halls with stethoscopes slung like medals,
but forget that healing begins
before the prescription is scribbled.

A patient enters - fragile, unsure,
and is met not with warmth,
but with eyes that undress
and words that pierce deeper than any needle.

In the sanctum of care,
some turn their duty into dominance,
comfort into control,
forgetting that the oath wasn't written
for wallets alone.

Unprofessionalism isn't just
a missed appointment
or a casual shrug - it's the silence
that screams in the patient's soul
after humiliation is handed out
like hospital forms.

Respect should not be optional.
Dignity should not depend
on the title before your name.
Whether in white coats or cubicles,
the heart of service
is empathy unshaken by status.

What you wear isn't who you are -
but how you treat another
is your truest uniform.

Writer's Note: “Beyond the White Coat” is a reflection on the human cost of clinical detachment. It focuses on unprofessionalism as emotional harm; that passes for a theme. I wrote this poem to challenge the idea that technical skill alone defines a healer. In many corridors of care, patients are reduced to charts and symptoms, while dignity is quietly eroded.
