The founder of the Headies Awards, Ayo Animashaun, has taken a swipe at Nigerian artistes who submit entries to foreign award bodies but refuse to do the same for the Headies, only to complain about not being nominated.
In a post shared on his Instagram story on Thursday, he described the situation as funny, noting that many will proudly post about submitting to awards that do not care about them while ignoring the platform built for them.
Animashaun's comment comes amid reports that several Nigerian stars, including Davido, Ayra Starr, Tems, Asake, Burna Boy, Rema, and Victony, have submitted their songs for consideration for the 2027 Grammy Awards.
He also addressed critics questioning his decision to host the Headies outside Nigeria, stating that as long as the artistes who benefit from the platform understand and appreciate it, and sponsors see the vision, he can stand firmly by his decisions.
According to him, everyone is entitled to an opinion, but not every opinion carries equal weight, and that posterity will be kind to those who see possibilities before they become obvious.
He wrote:
"Tom, Dick and Harry will submit entries to foreign award bodies that don't even care about them and proudly post about it. But these same people won't submit their entries to the Headies, yet they'll complain about not being nominated. Funny."
"As long as those who benefit from what we do understand and appreciate it, the artistes understand why taking The Headies to the moon sometimes is the right move, and our sponsors see the vision, we can stand firmly by our decisions. Everyone is entitled to an opinion, but not every opinion carries equal weight."
"Posterity will be kind to those who see possibilities before they become obvious."
The Nigerian Voice recently reported that the 18th edition of The Headies, originally scheduled for October 23, 2026, has been postponed to April 10 and 11, 2027, in Toronto, Canada.
