Nollywood actress Damilola Adegbite has pushed back against the belief that men should not cry, stating that emotional expression should never be mistaken for weakness.
In a video shared on her Instagram page, she reacted to a viral clip of a man who repeatedly insisted he was a man after being asked if he was crying.
The Yoruba actress stated that she does not subscribe to the idea that men should suppress their tears, adding that it should never make anyone feel less of a man. She explained that men have been conditioned to appear strong and bottle up their vulnerabilities even when they are going through difficult times.
She said if her own partner broke down in tears, she would comfort him and allow him to express himself without judgment.
The actress also called for safe spaces where men can openly discuss their feelings without fear of ridicule, warning that constantly suppressing emotions can lead to anxiety, depression, and other mental health challenges.
She urged men to avoid relationships and environments where they cannot express themselves freely, stressing that vulnerability should be embraced, not condemned.
She said:
"I do not subscribe to the idea that men should not cry."
"God forbid, crying should make you feel like less of a man."
