Nigerian singer and actor Bankole Wellington, popularly known as Banky W, has reflected on how a political loss in 2023 led him to a greater purpose.
In a post shared on his Instagram page, he revealed that while the experience inspired him in many ways, it also broke his heart. According to him, after surrendering to God, he realised that God was not trying to put him in a box but expanding his assignment.
The husband of actress Adesua Etomi, noted that he stopped asking God to choose between leadership, ministry, entertainment, and business, and instead embraced the fact that it was all of the above.
He revealed that he now serves as an Associate Pastor and Global Ambassador at Union Church, while also working as a teacher and leader at Union College. He reflected that one year later, he has learnt that what feels like the end of a story is often just God turning the page, and that God's plans for his life are bigger than his own.
He expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve under the leadership of Stephen and Zai Chandler, adding that there is more to come on the business, film, and music fronts.
He further expressed gratitude Jesus, noting that he is marking his first anniversary with Union Church.
He wrote:
"I used to joke that the 'P' in P.Banks stood for Professor, not Pastor. I guess God heard and said, 'Why not both?' See, I never wanted to be put in a box. But little did I know that while I was busy trying to figure out what I wanted to do with my life, God was already writing a story I couldn't have imagined."
"In 2023 I lost an election. And while the experience inspired me in many ways, it also broke my heart into a million little pieces. When the dust settled, I took those pieces back to God. And I surrendered."
"I asked Him, 'What's next? What's Your will for my life? Is it leadership or ministry? Entertainment or business? Marketplace or ministry?' And somewhere along the way, I realized that I was asking God to choose between things He had never asked me to separate. It wasn't either/or. It was all of the above."
"Turns out, God wasn't trying to put me in a box. He was expanding my assignment. So yes, I'm still a filmmaker, musician, and entrepreneur. But somehow, by the grace of God, I'm also a Pastor AND a Professor."
"One year later, I'm reminded that sometimes what feels like the end of your story is really just God turning the page. The election didn't go the way I hoped. But God's plans for my life are bigger than the plans I had for myself. And the beautiful thing is, He's still writing."
"There's more to come on the business, film, and music fronts (stay tuned), but today, I just want to pause and say THANK YOU, JESUS. For the doors You open and the ones you close. For the people you bring into my life and the purpose you reveal, one piece of the puzzle at a time. One year down. A lifetime of purpose ahead. Pls wish me a happy 1st #Unionversary #unionchurch."
