Ghanaian legal and media personality Samson Lardi Anyenini has urged newly called lawyers to uphold integrity, professional discipline and respect as they begin their legal careers.
He said lawyers must remain truthful to their clients, respect the courts and handle the trust placed in them with care.
Lardi Anyenini made the call in a social media post on Friday, October 9, congratulating more than 1,500 new lawyers called to the Ghana Bar and urging them to approach the profession with humility and a commitment to justice.
“To our new colleagues, take seriously the admonition of the Chief Justice, His Lordship Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, at the 63rd Call to the Bar Dinner. Let integrity, professional discipline and respect guide your conduct, including your dress and courtroom decorum,” he wrote.
The legal practitioner also stressed the importance of sound legal education and professional training, noting that wider access to legal education must go hand in hand with rigorous standards.
He commended Professor Raymond A. Atuguba, Director-General of the Council for Legal Education and Training (CLET), and his team for their work towards the new legal education regime.
“Be confident in your abilities and honest about their limits. Treat colleagues, clients and court staff with courtesy. Every brief concerns someone’s rights, livelihood, liberty or future,” he advised.
He urged the new lawyers to seek experienced mentors, read legislation and court decisions in full, and recognise the human consequences of their work.
Lardi Anyenini also called on experienced members of the Bar to provide younger colleagues with guidance and set a worthy example as they begin their professional journeys.
