Nigerian comedian and actor Ayo Makun, popularly known as AY, has recalled how Afrobeats star Asake sought his help as an aspiring artiste in 2019, long before the singer became an international music sensation.
The award-winning comedian shared the memory after watching Asake perform to a sold-out crowd at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas, during the singer's 'In God We Trust' tour.
AY revealed that the concert made him reminisce on an Instagram message he had received from Asake several years earlier. According to AY, he did not see the message when it was initially sent, with the singer then introducing himself as Ololade and asking the comedian to support his music.
Asake's message read, "Good Evening sir. I'm OLOLADE. How are you doing sir? I'm here for help, KING AY. I just drop a record titled – African Something. You vibing to the song is a lot to my career."KING AY, Help a son sir. May God bless you and your family. I love you KING AY."
Seven years after that appeal, AY found himself watching the same artiste command a packed Houston arena, a moment he described as a reminder of how dramatically fortunes can change.
The comedian, however, stressed that he was not sharing the old message to take credit for Asake's fame.
"I'm not saying all of this to take any credit. That glory belongs to God and his talent and of course the hard work that is put into all of this," he said.
"The truth is that the person asking to be seen today may become the person the whole world will celebrate tomorrow. So be good to people, respect their dreams, never look down on anyone because you simply cannot tell what tomorrow brings," he said.
AY further revealed that Asake's management took him backstage after the Houston performance, where the singer personally came over to greet him.
Reflecting on the concert, the comedian praised the singer's performance and humility despite his success. "Ah Asake, you were simply phenomenal," AY said. "Nigeria celebrates you, Africa celebrates you and the world is seeing all your doings and workings right now."
