Winneba (C/R), Feb. 5, GNA - Malaria claimed 67 while anaemia killed 39 people at the Winneba Government Hospital last year. This was contained in a report presented by Dr. H. O. France, Medical Superintendent in-charge of the Hospital, at the annual performance review meeting of the Awutu-Effutu-Senya District Directorate of the Ghana Health Services (GHS).
Sectional Heads, Managers of the 10 health facilities as well as officials of the District Mutual Health Insurance Scheme, participated to take stock and adopt strategies.
Dr. France said there were 1,048 hypertension cases in 2005 as against 1,558 in 2004, adding that there were 468 typhoid cases last year with 1170 chest infections last year compared with 1088 in 2004. A total of 2,420 pregnant women reported at the Hospital last year as against 3,399 in 2004.
Meanwhile Dr G. K. Morrison, District Director of Health Services, has announced a programme to combat malaria in the area this year and advised the people to maintain sound environmental and domestic hygiene. Closing the meeting, he said that was to supplement the efforts of the Ministry of Health in the fight against malaria and other diseases, which retarded socio-economic progress.
