President Akufo-Addo has declared Techiman as the capital of the newly created Bono East Region.

Akufo-Addo made the announcement at an event held at the Jubilee House on Wednesday where he presented the Constitutional Instrument to back the creation of the new region.

The Brong Ahafo Regional Minister, Evans Opoku-Bobie has been directed to be the caretaker Minister of the region until a substantive minister is appointed.

The government has already allocated GHc20 million for each of the six new regions being created to allow them to take off smoothly.

The president presented the Constitutional Instrument for the creation of the Savannah and North East Regions on Tuesday.

President Akufo-Addo named Damango as the capital of the Savannah Region while Nalerigu was named as the capital of the North East Region.

Nkoranza chiefs unhappy

The chiefs and people of the Nkoranza Traditional Area had earlier accused the Minister of Regional Reorganisation and Development, Dan Botwe, and his Deputy, Martin Adjei Mensah Korsah of sidelining them in the creation of the region.

At a press conference on Monday, the chief of Buaben, Nana Owusu Dwamena Ameyaw III, said Nkoranza Traditional Council's representatives were excluded from the meetings organised in the process of creating the region.

“On 5th February 2018, the first meeting organised by Minister of Regional Reorganisation and Development for the Commission of Inquiry to meet traditional leaders and the media in the proposed Bono East Region was not attended by the chiefs and people of Nkoranza because the organisers did not invite them.”

He also added that “when the Justice Brobbey Commission received a petition from thirteen out of 14 paramountcies who strongly objected to the change of name from Brong to 'Bono East' Region, a meeting was called to discuss the issue, Nananom from Nkoranza Traditional Area were not invited, possibly because they vehemently objected the change of name from Brong to Bono.”
