A Ghanaian man identified as Isaac Agyekum has allegedly defrauded Dutchmen of about €200,000 in an alleged romance and money scam, with one of the alleged victims confronting him during a video call arranged through his friend.
The confrontation happened when the Dutchmen spoke with Agyekum’s friend at a hotel, who agreed to call him on video. However, when Agyekum realised the men were watching the call, he reportedly ended it before they could question him further.
During the call, one of the men directly challenged him over the money he was accused of taking.
“Where’s all his money you stole?” the man asked, before adding, “Because you’re a Sakawa boy, man. Show your face.”
Agyekum disappeared from the call, prompting one of the men to call him a coward and demand he return the money.
The conversation later turned to how the alleged transactions began. Agyekum’s friend explained that Ghanaian classmates introduced him to Agyekum and told him that his friend’s in-laws wanted to buy a car from the United States.
“He said his in-laws wanted to buy a car, but they want a car from the States. So they want to get a car from here, so I should put it there,” the friend recounted.
He said he initially agreed to help, after which money began coming in. When asked about $70,000, he claimed he had sent the money to Agyekum in cash after being told the car was no longer needed.
The Dutch men asked whether he had evidence of the transactions and whether Agyekum had paid him a commission. The friend denied receiving a formal commission, saying Agyekum sometimes told him to keep a portion of the money.
During the discussion, the men also examined details they said linked Agyekum to the transactions, including his name and phone number.
One of the men later appealed to the friend to help arrange another video call so Agyekum could explain himself and address the allegations.
“You need to pay all the money you’re taking from him,” the friend said in a message directed at Agyekum. “The man is here. Whatever the money is, he needs it.”
The Dutch men expressed frustration over the alleged loss, questioning how someone could take another person’s money without returning it.
