Following the death of Hon Boakye Agyarko, New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament (MP) for Ayawaso West-Wuogon Constituency, the seat has become vacant for a by-election.

Death is always a sad event for the bereaved relatives, whether consanguine family, work colleague, or through organisational amity, but particularly in politics, a vacant political position becomes a happy chance for thoughtless aspiring contestants.

It is the coming into being of this event that our information desk can confidently reveal that the Chief of Staff (Akosua Frema Opare) is preparing her daughter to contest for the seat, and be voted for as the MP for Ayawaso West-Wuogon.

Akosua Frema Opare became the MP for this Constituency when she controversially out-witted Isaac Amoh, the then choice of the electorate, and took over the seat.

Frema Opare had returned from the UK, and though she had never been known as NPP UK Branch member, the love of adventure and novelty fascinated some of the delegates to do the unthinkable to controversially oust Amoh for Frema.

The United Party has it as a tradition for clean democratic contests, yet there are times when some people who live without scruples believe in and apply dubious means to win voting contests.

Fraudulently rich Frema Opare is capitalizing on Ghana's inter, and intra-Party vote-buying strategy to secure the vacant seat for her daughter.

Such historical occurrences can be cited in the Dome-Kwabenya Constituency where the current Speaker of Parliament (Hon. Mike Aaron Ocquaye) wanted his son to succeed him as MP. The delegates, however, rejected Mike Ocquaye’s son. They voted for now Hon. Adwoa Safo who went on to become their MP.

Indeed, vote-buying is such a damaging factor to democracy that we need a political administration that can rule against it.

The United Party tradition has never embraced a culture and tradition of family inheritance to political positions. Prof. K.A. Busia never attempted this in his short-lived administration, neither did John Agyekum Kufuor. We have always believed in, and adjusted to meritorious contests in political positioning.

We therefore enjoin delegates to eschew cash and gifts-influenced choices, and rather make a prudent and well-thought of choice during this bye election.
