The Sun Rose But Never Set

The Sun Rose But Never Set
12.06.2018 LISTEN

It is usual for the sun to rise early at daybreak and set during evening time. To our greatest surprise, this phenomenon which we have known since ages has created a memorable history. It’s 6 o’clock pm, 11th June and the sun has refused to set in order to give way to the moon to give light to the night. It looks like its noon time. Who will even conceive that evening is at hand without looking at his or her clock? Children are on the streets still playing. Adults are seen in groups commenting on this wonderful events happening. What could be the cause of the sun not setting today? Have we in anyway sinned against the gods of our land? We need to pacify the gods.

Let’s go and consult the oracle to know what exactly the gods have to say about. Baba Ganga, the priest for our chief gods would definitely lead us to rectify these calamities. He has been a reliable and faithful servant. He will definitely consult our great gods and would soon bring us good news. Baba Ganga returns after 30 minutes time and his face looked moody. The gods might be angry, one of the elders said. What did the gods say? The other elders angrily asked the priest. The priest was still not speaking. Everything looked like he was still in ecstasy. He needed to be given time to become normal. He is still possessed. The furious elder said, Nana, whatever be the message, you let us know for we are running out of patience. Finally, Baba Ganga is back to normal. What message is he carrying from the gods?

The great god of our land, Baba Nyakonle is quite. He has refused to communicate with his servant. I don’t know what is wrong either. But I believe he will surely speak to me. Baba Ganga begins the incantation again. The spirit consumes him. This time around, he begins to speak to the hearing of everyone gathered there. The sun has refused to set and you have come to me to know why. Have you all examined yourselves to know why it is happening so? Have you also taken the pain to read meaning into why the sun has refused to set? I will tell you why.

Despite our effort to make this village looks like other villages round us, our effort have been in vain. We have assured you of our maximum support of any project that will help improve your live. We have always been at your services but you do not show any sense of patriotism. You have been in this village but your love and care is for other villages around us and in yourselves. You have made us look stupid before our colleague gods. We cannot even open our mouths to say anything when we go for our yearly summit. How come? It’s all because you have for years now displaced a good level of laziness and I don’t care spirit. Many of you instead of using the days’ hours to work, are found lazing about. Many others are found working lottery at your work places. Many too in their offices have devoted themselves tirelessly to their cell phones. Their various cell phones have become their shrines which pay homage to. They are with their phones 24/7. Instead of attending to customers, we find you spending hours with your phones. Has this not affected productivity? How would the village grow economically if you continue to use working hours making calls and engaging others in a chat on your cell phones? The work place is not the place for spending hours on the phone: work.

You turn to us for an answer to why the sun is not sitting? You’re the cause. How do you expect the village to be sanctimo if you have decided to dirty its surroundings? You lither the village like sheep and goats that excretes as they walk. You expect the village to be clean when you have not made up your very minds to stop dropping rubbishes. Have you no eyes to see dustbins put on your various streets? Have you no idea of what they are meant for? You must make use of the dustbins if you want to have a clean environment. Have you not found out how many years it takes for poly rubbers to get rotten? Yet you dispose them any how though your elders have provided a better way of disposing them. How many among you still do not defecate on the street corners and have made it uneasy for people to breath? Many of you are running to the clinic everyday being chased by malaria. How do you fight malaria if you do not keep your environment immaculately clean? You’re being chased out of your own house by flood as a result of your own attitudes. The gutters are all chocked, as a result, drainage is seemly impossible. When the water cannot flow through the canal, its direction changes and now sacks you from your homes. Do you blame your elders for this one too? You know the number of lives that have been lost to this flooding. You’re the cause but you seek an answer to why to sun never sets today.

You live in a village but what you’re to do as a member of the community, you do not do them. You do not respond to all the calls from your leader. Many of you here have not responded to the call of the chief to help sail a way to develop the village. No one shows respect to the chief all in the name of human rights and freedoms. You’re free, yes you are, and no one is taking it from you. But you must note that to be free means to act cautiously and smartly in intelligent, thereby developing your environment with this free will you have. Your freedom doesn’t mean freedom to plan and arrange words of insults against your chief like a poet who is writing a love letter to his newly crushed girl; rather, freedom is a call to feel free to fully act in a way that your village will be free from poor health situations. This is how you can make use of your freedom: to cure the village from the various diseases you’ve inflicted on her. Do not sharpen your mouths in freedom to insult people. Besides, it is your mind that has this right and not your mouth. Therefore, free your minds from colloquial and colonial thinking and think with your village and for your village and how to develop it. Move your village to the place she must be and that sun will surely set. Until that the sun will never set.

Another answer we have for you is that many of you have colluded among yourselves. You’ve cheated the village and have illegally than worst things against her. What is supposed to be for the benefit of the whole village, you have smuggled them home. What is meant for public use, you have redirected them for private use? How many among are still not keeping the village properties with you. Did the chief not give out fund to raise a public toilet and urinal? Where did the monies go? The village is not developed and you wail like a child who after sucking the mother’s breasts for hours but when put to rest will begin wailing again. This is who you have become. How many of you elders have the village’s vehicles that are to be used on the village farms but you’re using them rather on your farms? Must you blame your chief for this too? Ask your elders why the sun has refused to set. They are the reason.

“Government’s work, we drag it, we do not carry it our shoulders”. Apathy is what is killing your village. Many of you villagers do not have a sense of maintenance and a sense of preservation when it comes to public properties. Many of you will pass by when they see that the properties of the village is going bad. This demonic spirit is what is causing your village. You must show care and take interest in the village you live.

You have no village beside Ghana. Let’s love Ghana and make her great and strong by doing what we are to do as citizens. Like the sun that never sets to give way to the moon, we must take a break wherever we’re and do an introspection of what we might been doing that is not helping our nation to grow. Take a break and examine yourself. You’re the big mirror in which Ghana is viewing herself, check if she looks pretty, otherwise, make her look pretty.
