The Northern Regional Security Council has deployed a combined team of police and military officers to Chereponi in the Northern Region, following recent clashes in the town.
The chief and 12 elders of Naaduni, a village near Chereponi have been arrested following the death of two men after clashes between the Konkombas and the Chekosis.
The two ethnic groups have been battling over a piece of land for years.
Regional Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Yusif Tanko, told Joy News police have stepped up security in the area to ensure calm returns.
“A search of the chief’s palace revealed shotguns and they [chief and his elders] are being held to assist with investigations. But we are assuring that the police and military will continue to be in the area until we are sure of normalcy,” he said.

Conflict hotspot
Last year, over 500 thatched mud houses were set ablaze following similar clashes in the Chereponi area.
Hundreds of women and children were displaced following that conflict.
No deaths were recorded in that instance, but scores sustained injuries.
