AngloGold Ashanti Ghana joins the continent in commemorating Africa Day’s 55th anniversary. This is an annual celebration of the foundations of what became the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) – now the African Union (AU). The principle behind Africa Day is to establish an integrated, prosperous and peaceful Africa, driven by its own citizens and representing a dynamic force in the global arena.
The Iduapriem and Obuasi gold mines are key assets of AngloGold Ashanti’s portfolio, and the company is aiming to ensure their longevity, sustainability and commercial viability. Currently, Iduapriem Gold Mine is engaged in the Teberebie pushback project which aims to extend the life of mine. This will result in a positive contribution for the Ghanaian economy as it translates into further taxes and dividends to the Government of Ghana, and more job opportunities for Ghanaians. Currently, about 99% of the Iduapriem workforce is Ghanaian.
Earlier this year, AngloGold Ashanti’s Board approved the redevelopment of Obuasi mine, pending ratification of a suite of agreements by the Government of Ghana, through its Parliament. This investment underscores the Company’s commitment to growing its Africa footprint, particularly for the benefit of Ghana and its people.
The mining industry continues to be a sector that presents significant opportunities to positively contribute to local, regional and national economies in Africa.
“We are proud to join the rest of Africa in celebrating Africa Day. We aspire to work closely with host communities and governments through the promotion of economic development projects for the betterment of communities where we operate,” Managing Director of Iduapriem mine, Jasper Musadaidzwa said. “We are a proud member of the Ghanaian business community.”
