Security At Ghana's Northern Borders To Be Beefed Up

The Ministry of National Security in collaboration with all the security agencies is currently embarking on an operation dubbed 'Operation Kondanlgou-2018' along the northern borders of Ghana to beef up security and combat Cross-Border crimes.

Ghana is collaborating with neighbouring countries at the northern frontiers such as, Togo, Burkina Faso and Benin to conduct the operation to beef up security and ensure the safety of residence along the borders.

A statement read on behalf of the Minister, Mr Albert Kan-Dapaah, by Mr Ben Dery, Director in charge of Technical Operations at the Ministry on Wednesday at a press briefing in Bawku, said the aim of the operation was to keep criminal elements in check and provide security for law abiding persons and make the country a safer place to live in.

Mr Dery stated that the operation was estimated to last for few days and that it was focused at combating trans-border crimes such as terrorism, human trafficking, armed robbery and smuggling among others.

He mentioned the operation areas as Kulungugu, Namon, Bunkpurugu, Nalerigu, Gambaga, Walewale, and Nanpkanduri.

The rest are Bolgatanga, Tongo, Nangode, Zebilla, Binduri, Pusiga Sapeliga and Garu.

Lieutenant Colonial Henry Ansah-Akrofi, Ghana's Army Director in charge of Operations who doubles as Leader for the Kondanlgou Operations in Ghana, indicated that as part of the operations, security personnel would conduct joint border patrols, snap and permanent checks to help monitor and control the movement of persons within the operational areas.

Lt. Col. Ansah-Akrofi said highways and other relevant routes would be patrolled, while random searches would be conducted for arms and ammunitions, contraband goods as well as identify beats and pillars along the country's borders.

The Operations' Leader called on law abiding citizens to cooperate with the modalities of the operation by giving maximum cooperation to the personnel who may come in contact with them, and gave assurance that the operations would cater for the safety of residence within the operational area.

The Commanding Officers in-charge of the Operation for the three countries include Mr Ben Dery, Lt. Col. Henry Ansah-Akrofi, Chief Superintendent Yao Tetegah Bawku, Divisional Police Commander, Captain Akila Gendarmerie of Togo, John Jack Kafando, So Police Commander in Burkina Faso and Lt. Col. Sake Mohammed Liaison Officer for the Benin Army.

Lt. Col. Sake Mohammed commended the group for the operation because it was going to beef up security of the participating countries and promote socio-economic activities among these countries.
