The Current UEW Matters In Perspective And My Take As An Alumnus
04.11.2017 LISTEN

There is a blatant attempt by some members of UTAG who are bent on politicising the current debacle in uew and a serious move to squeeze ethnocentric bigotry into the matter just to poison the intention behind a decision of the high court and the current governing council of UEW for actions being taken against two officers and three additional officers just to make sure that, the current investigation by EOCO into an allegation of procurement breaches against same officers wont be compromised as they continue to stay in office.

The VC and the finance officer were all asked to step aside by the high court which is a court of competent jurisdiction so to speak. It is interesting to note that, after UEW UTAG attempt to join the case at the winneba high court was jettisoned, some members of UTAG have decided to put same matter which is before a court on political and tribal lines for reasons best known to them. The truth of the matter is that, UEW as an institution of the Republic is fraught with looting brigade and i doubt the genuineness of the kind of AUDIT that has been going on for a decade now.

The assemblyman is in the court of law to fight for justice which is his exclusive right per the laws of Ghana and any move by some section of UTAG to impute ethnocentrism into the matter will not suffice on the face of logic and common sense in the eyes of the ordinary Ghanaian because, I have been a student of UEW and knows the institution very well. UEW is an institution that, even a clueless DETECTIVE" two days stay on that campus alone will be able to pick intelligence on how the authorities team up to milk the ordinary student in a RAMBO looting style. There has been a total mess in UEW for some years now and the matter before the court is seeking to ensure an immaculate cleansing of the said institution.

When i was a student, i used the little resources i had to battle Authorities on this same thing which is currently happening in main campus. Early this year, chronicle news paper published a full petition together with me and my colleagues filed to BNI with a caption" TWO STUDENTS PETITION BNI FOR THIEVERY AND EXTORTION IN UEW,K". This petition forced the embattled VC to issue an incoherent a drunken like disjointed rejoinder as a counter petition. In the said incompetent rejoinder, the embattled VC blatantly lied that, the decision to charge interest on fees partly paid by students was a decision of a council whose legitimacy is currently on the altar of impeachment at the winneba high court.

The VC lied because, there was already a negotiation between student leaders concerning students who had financial problems and could not pay their fees in full. Nowhere did management and student leaders agree that, interest should be charged on fees partly paid as if UEW was a financial institution where interest are paid on loans taken by customers .

In 2015,. I personally dragged UEW,Kumasi campus to EOCO for criminal investigation on financial malfeasance as well as procurement infractions pursuant to a lecture theatre project student were levied for close to six years without meeting the contractual obligations management entered with students which was to the effect that, after six years of levying students, a lecture theatre with offices will be completed where SRC and ESA were going to have offices allocated to them.

As at the time the said student leaders entered into that contract with management, SRC and ESA who were the contributors of the project were signatories to the account which was opened specifically for the said project. Two years down the line when those students had completed , school authorities went to change signatories against a caveat of the said contract and were operating the said account at the blindside of the students who were the major stakeholders in so far as the project was concerned.

After six years ,the lecture theatre did not even get to 40% of work done. As we speak, the said project is still there and students on campus could make an attestation to this fact. In 2015, management proposed a levy of GHC 100 to be paid by every student for three years towards the completion of the said project. Management did that through the backdoor but the untimely intervention of some of us who opposed this incompetent THIEVERY and students were saved. Some of us were threatened for invoking external jurisdiction to object to the said levy.

At the end, EOCO had to come in. The school account was frozen for almost a month because EOCO was conducting an investigation into the fraudulent project. The Finance officer who was at post then had to take a panic "leave that ate" into his retirement because he couldnt withstand EOCO heat. As we speak ,the investigation is still ongoing in kumasi campus.

As at the investigation was ongoing under an NDC government, nobody sought to politicise it and nothing with regards to tribal ethnocentric issue was raised in that matter. But today, another EOCO investigation into alleged fraudulent dealings in Main campus has sparked issues of unnecessary tribalism and political innuendos all because a certain government is in power and there is this incongruous perception that, certain individuals within government are using state institutions to attack uew and this is done by people who ought to have known better. The simple question is , why didnt people raise same issue they are raising today when i dragged the entire university before EOCO for defrauding students? Why didnt people accuse the NDC government of being behind what i did as a student then?. Why cant people with enviable certificate raise the bar but will do things that will put their intelligence in doubt and bring them before the altar of mockery, ridicule and contempt?

I have read a lot of propaganda articles from people who claim to be alumnus of Uew and truth be told in it raw form that, those behind the articles are seriously ignorant about previous happenings of UEW with respect to CORRUPTION and UNFAIR treatment of students.

This is not and cannot be the first time a state institution is descending on uew, the current EOCO investigation in main campus had it route from Kumasi campus and this is known to every activist on Kumasi campus so those politicising and raising tribal lines on the current matter should try their best to be abreast with the history of state institutions " descending on Kumasi campus which is a branch of UEW.

Uew needs a complete overhaul and that is the only means to ensure sanity in their operations. The matter before the winneba high court will send a strong signal to the other public universities we have in Ghana so that, they will be guided by the laws of the land in their dealings. I am an alumnus and i am for any cleansing exercise that will ensure SANITY in UEW....
