Fosu (C/R), Sept. 21, GNA - Vanside Adult Development, an adult education focused Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), has organised a six-month intensive adult education and training programme for over 70 youth in the Assin North District of the Central Region.
The idea was aimed at reducing the high rate of adult illiteracy in the area to create the much needed human resource to accelerate the country's scio-economic development.
The beneficiaries who were drawn from major communities including Akonfodi, Nyankomasi, Anyibrim, Akropong, Odumasi, Akropong and Fosu were given 10 exercise books each and other learning materials to enhance their academic work.
Mr Evans Asiedu, Director of the organisation, said this at a durbar during the celebration of this year's International Literacy Day at Assin Fosu.
The day, celebrated annually on 8th September by the United Nations, is an opportunity for governments, civil society and other stakeholders to highlight the significance and improvements in world's remaining literacy challenges.
The celebration, which was held under theme: "Literacy in a Digital World" formed a key component of the UN's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and UN's 2030 agenda for sustainable development.
Mr Asiedu said there is the need for all to support adult literacy programmes to enable them reach difficult-to-teach rural areas where all kinds of challenges had militated against seeking formal education and deprived many of formal education.
He described the illiteracy rate in the district especially in the rural areas as unacceptably high and counterproductive for sustainable development.
Mr Asiedu said the feedback received from beneficiaries of adult education programme indicates that it had made a positive impact on improving the livelihoods of learners and the society at large.
Mr Francis Aggrey, District Director of Non-Former Education, commended the NGO for the initiative to help bridge the literacy gap in the district.
