Academic City College graduates 225 students

Accra, Oct. 10, GNA - The Academic City College, formally of Sikkim Manipal University (SMU), has graduated 225 students from the undergraduate and post-graduate programmes in Accra.

The graduands were presented with certificates and medals for their outstanding performance in their respective disciplines.

The students graduated in Masters and Bachelor for Science in Information Technologies, Masters and Bachelor in Business Administration and Masters of Arts in Journalism and Mass Communication.

The graduation is the first ceremony since the change of the name from SMU, which was necessitated by the need to respond to the global challenge to forge a closer relevance of tertiary programmes.

Dr Kapil Gupta, Chairman of the Governing Council of Academic City College, speaking at the 6th graduation ceremony, said the College has expanded the new campus in Kumasi to help students with professional skills in Ashanti region and its environs.

He said this is critical to ensure that skilled and well-trained personnel could never be over-looked hence the need for government to embrace public private partnerships to respond to the needs of students.

Dr Gupta said the College is affiliated with other tertiary institutions like the University of Cape Coast and others abroad, which offer students four- year teaching in areas such as ICT, Banking and Finance and Human Resource Management.

Professor Domwini Dabire Kuupole, former Vice Chancellor of University of Cape Coast outlined the importance of education, adding that "education is key to the development of any society".

He said: ''Education is power,'' emphasising that a society without education would have issues of advancing developmental projects since it eases burden in the society.

Prof Kuupole admonished the need for authorities to re-organise the educational curriculum and programmes in the country to meet international and global standard, which he said, is the hallmark of Academic City College.

He urged tertiary institutions to focus on admitting limited number of students to ensure quality teaching and learning for the desired outcome.

Dr Osei Darkwa, President of the Ghana Telecom University College, commended the students for their achievements and hard work and urged them to justify their skills and knowledge on the field.

Dr Abhishek Tyagi, the Rector of the college, in his welcome address, said quality is the hallmark of Academic City College and ''we give students not just knowledge but experience''.
