The Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) has named soccer miners AshantiGold and the Porcupine Warriors Asante Kotoko as the contenders for the 36th SIC Nyemitei SWAG Cup trophy.
According to the President of SWAG Mr. Kwabena Yeboah, the decision to call on the two clubs is no coincidence because whilst Kotoko has been the most dominant force in the history of the competition since its inception in 1972, winning 13 times, AshantiGold won the trophy when it was last played in 2010.
Mr. Kwabena Yeboah promised SIC Insurance, the official sponsor of the SWAG Cup for the past seventeen years value for money.
“Permit me to express my heartfelt appreciation to Mr. Kwei Mensah Ashidam, the Acting Managing Director of SIC Insurance and the entire staff for their unalloyed support to SWAG. On our part we promise a package full of eternal reciprocation and mutuality to the eternal benefit of SIC Insurance and SWAG,” he said.
The SWAG Cup, which used to be called the SWAG Gold Cup is played in honour of the late H.P Nyemitei, former Deputy Managing Director of the then State Insurance Corporation, now SIC Insurance.
Indeed, the completion which was first won by Mysterious Ebusua Dwarfs has helped produced football greats such as Mathias Anim, Kuku Dadzie, Addai Kyenkyehene, and the late Jones Attuquayefio amongst others.
The Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi will host the 2015 showdown between Kotoko and AshantiGold on Sunday, November 29.
