The 'old schools' that are used to posting letters and sending messages by telex, fax and phone calls in the recent past seem to know a little about what time it is regarding communications on phones and computers. But the 'whatapp' 'Twitter' 'app'like other communication tools are in to do a lot of good to mankind. They are means of promoting quick interactions between and among friends. To some extent they constitute vehicles for conveying warm greetings, messages and amusements between and among families' neighbors and loved ones.
Like app and whatsapp, Twitter was established in the US in March 2006 as an online social networking and micro blogging service that enables users to send and read short 140-character text messages on smart phones like android and iphone ant computers . Its registered users can read and post tweets, but unregistered users can only read them. Users access Twitter through the website interface, SMS, or mobile device app. Twitter Inc. is based in San Francisco and has offices in New York City, Boston, Austin and Detroit.
Twitter had 3000 employees, made $664 million in revenue in 2013 alone and currently has more than 500million registered users. This organization is rated high and is making waves in the communication industry worldwide. As you can see Twitter and its kind are of benefit to mankind worldwide
However due to some developments arising out of communications by variety of users of these tools, we need to be careful with them before they lead us into temptation to rather harm good friendships and neighborhood. A good message not well thought through could jeopardize friendships kept over many years. These communication tools like twitter now used by presidents, ministries and heads of department of governments and non governmental agencies are swift and one needs to convey a message on it in few words that can carry weight beyond ones imagination. However when used by corporate bodies and governments, their contents must be crosschecked very well by heads of departments.
After revelations in the news media on the exchanges on twitters between the president of Ghana and the US Embassy in Accra , I took my time to read the twits from the president and reaction to the twit by the US Embassy and felt a bit worried due to mishandling of a message by one of the parties. Because I do not want to inflict more harm arising out of the fracas between them I do not want to be judgmental. Whatever the case the US and Ghana need each other and must work out a mechanism to sort out this 'little issue' to continue to live in peace. Yes we need to tread cautiously on a matter that concerns two friendly countries.
I am not surprised that Ms. Hanna Tetteh, Foreign Minister, Mr. Felix Kwakye Deputy Minister of Communications and Okudjeto Ablakwa Deputy Minister of Education and Mr. Ras Mubarak head of the National Youth Authority have all waded into the issues arising out of the twits between the president and the US embassy. My advice is that they have done enough good as citizens but they must hold their horses and not go to war. We need to react as Ghanaians in defense of our president on this matter.
However since the US Embassy has come out with some apology and went on to state how the twit from their end came about, we need to do well to let sleeping dogs to lie and begin to pursue the much needed diplomatic and other issues, that tie us together and that are beneficial to the government and ordinary people of Ghana. We have a lot of Ghanaian and US citizens in each other's nations that are currently working to eke out a living.
There are a whole lot of projects completed with the help of the US since Ghana became independence. These include the Akosombo Hydro Electric Dam funded by Kaiser Engineers. New pacts signed by Ghana and the US on our fight against malaria and HIV Aids being funded by the US must be pursued. Our agreement on a new millennium compact worth over half a billion dollars needed to complete our infrastructural developments are worth pursuing.
At least we must shame the devil by turning our attention onto issues that would bring mutual benefits between the United States of America and Ghana. We should not allow 'little pardonable slips' to inflict harm in our relationships with our good friends. For, those things that unite us are more that those that divide us. As said in a popular Ghanaian proverb 'we must not follow the fly into inflicting more injury to our already aching sores on our feet'
