Linda Dor, Check Your Prices

Opinion Linda Dor, Check Your Prices
JUL 10, 2014 LISTEN

The Linda Dor highway rest stop and restaurant at Bunso junction is conveniently located in between Ghana's two major cities: Accra and Kumasi. It therefore serves as the perfect place to freshen up whilst embarking on a journey from any of the two cities to the other. On a lighter note, the place also serves as a perfect point to celebrate or brace up for the tortuous war-zone of a road before and after Suhum (Hopefully, one day, a minister or the president will use the road and notice its deplorable nature).

The rest stop has more or less become a mandatory stop for VIP and other buses that commute between the two cities. Thus, whether you like it or not, if you are in a VIP bus commuting between the two cities, you will spend some few minutes at Linda Dor.

Over the past couple of years and particularly since the introduction of the VIP buses in Ghana, prices of food items and other services provided by Linda Dor have gone up ridiculously high. It is often said that prices of commodities and services tend to be cheaper away from the major cities but Linda Dor's exorbitant price list makes it a very glaring unwelcome exception.

For example, it is not uncommon for soft drinks that go for about GH¢ 2 in most places in Ghana to be sold at GH¢ 5. The urinal facility at Linda Dor which would have been free in any Rest Stop outside this country charges 50 pesewas per use, arguably the highest in the country.

I do not want to believe that the Rest Stop has settled on these prices because people are literally forced to use their facilities particularly when the services they offer are not superior to what exists elsewhere. I think it is very prudent for companies to be realistic and not to be seen us opportunistic which usually does not augur well for their long term survival especially if there should face competition in the near future.

The loss of the premier status of Ghana telecom, in the face of competition from other telecommunications companies, after enjoying years of monopoly should be a good reminder to Linda Dor.

On my way out of one of my 'forced trips' to Linda Dor, I sighted an announcement on the usual Wednesday prayer meeting at the Rest Stop. I couldn't help but shout a big hallelujah and sigh albeit sarcastically, Ghana, the religious nation.
