Mion NPP Chairman resigns barely two weeks after winning constituency polls

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Chairman for the Mion Constituency in the Northern Region, Sulaiman Abubakar, has resigned from his position with immediate effect.

Mr Abubakar announced his decision in a letter dated Saturday, August 8, 2026, and addressed to the NPP Northern Regional Chairman.

“My resignation is personal,” he stated without providing further details about the reasons behind his decision.

He expressed appreciation to the constituency’s Council of Elders, patrons, polling station and electoral area executives, as well as party members and supporters, for the confidence they reposed in him during his tenure.

Despite stepping down as constituency chairman, Mr Abubakar stressed that he remained committed to the NPP and would continue to support its efforts to return to power in the 2028 general elections.

“I remain an ardent and good-standing member of the party and will continue to discharge my role as a member to ensure we recapture power in 2028,” he said.

He also wished the constituency leadership well and indicated that he would continue to maintain contact with the party.

The resignation comes barely two weeks after Mr Abubakar was declared the winner of the NPP’s Mion Constituency elections.

However, his resignation letter did not disclose the specific circumstances that led to his decision to relinquish the position.
