NPP Women's Wing Mourns Gladys Asmah

The women's wing of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has expressed its profound sadness at the passing of Hon. Mrs. Gladys Asmah, which occurred on Tuesday, June 24th, 2014, at the Korle-bu Teaching Hospital. She was 78.

Mrs. Gladys Asmah was a Cabinet Minister in the NPP administration of H.E. President John Agyekum Kufuor, from 2001-2008.

Speaking to the issue, the National Women's Organiser of the NPP, Madam Otiko Afisa Djaba, said the women's wing of the NPP especially, and Mother Ghana, had lost a model political leader who spent most of her lifetime working hard to promote the empowerment of women in Ghana, and the world at large.

According to Otiko, from her days as an Assistant Manager at the British Council in London, to being a private entrepreneur here in Ghana in the 70s, Mama Gladys as she was affectionately called, virtually led a life which constantly sought to create platforms for the development and empowerment of women, socially, and economically. 'I recall how, out of her desire to see the economic emancipation of women, she willingly offered her workshops to trainees of the Women's Training Institute, Takoradi, to acquire practical knowledge' she said.

She said the NPP and the Country as a whole will remember Mrs. Gladys Asmah as their first female Member of Parliament for Takoradi, and first Minister of Women and Children Affairs, who played a key role in establishing the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) of the Ghana Police Service.

Madam Otiko Djaba extended her sympathies and that of the entire women's wing of the NPP, to the family of the late former MP and Cabinet Minister, and assured them of the Party's unflinching support in this trying time.
