JUNE 4TH HAS OUTLIVED ITS USEFULNESS

June 4th 1979 reminds us of the date some men of the Armed forces came to power in a coup d'etat that saw the removal of the Supreme Military Council. This revolution was traced to a number of issues including corruption, bad governance, lack of discipline and frustrations in the army and among the Ghanaian public. Again, June 4th 1979 marked the day on which young officers in the army deliver to Mr. J.J Rawlings his freedom.

The continuous celebration of the June 4th Uprising by Mr. Rawlings is shameful and a sheer arrogance to the laws of Ghana. Why these young officers ousted the Akuffo's government and used Rawlings' name as the coup leader is not in the secret. Everybody in Ghana knows that Rawlings's regimes stand worse when it comes to corruption. If Mr. Rawlings prides himself as a saint, why did he preside over all the mind-boggling cases of corruption? The Rawlings in 1979 was the Rawlings from the years 1992 to 2000.

It's worrying that the very country which Rawlings sought to wipe out right from 1979 till 1992 allows him to perpetuate his inhumane activities. Why is Mr. Rawlings hiding his crimes by smuggling the indemnity clause into our constitution? Why do you run if you have not stolen something? The very reasons for which Mr. Rawlings abuse Ghanaians every year exist in multiple folds in the very party he founded. It should not be assumed that he is unaware of the gargantuan corruptions in the Mahama government. Or is it the case that Mr. Rawlings is selective in his soul cleansing? Many innocent Ghanaians were executed on suspected cases of corruption. If people with fat belly meant corruption, why is 'Junior Jesus' turning a blind eye to broad day light corruption?

Mr. Rawlings should be reminded that the commemoration of June 4th was declared illegal by the Supreme Court of Ghana. What is wrong is wrong and no amount of painting should change it. Late president Mills stood by his principles and never participated in the illegal June 4th celebration as a president.

The men in uniform all over the world are noted for discipline. Mr. Rawlings was once in the revered uniform and it's expected that discipline is still in him. The so called hardships that pushed Mr. Rawlings and his men to act on June 4th 1979 are more evident today. He must do the honourable thing by accepting the fact that June 4th is illegal. Ghana is a democratic state and all must abide by the constitution.
