The High Commissioner of Ghana to the United Kingdom and Ireland Prof. Kwaku Danso-Boafo on 11th December, 2013, was honoured as a Fellow of the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons for his outstanding contribution to medical education research, at the postgraduate level. Other honorees were Prof. Dr. Rolf Horstman of Germany and Prof. Aaron Lawson, Provost of the University of Ghana Medical School.

A citation that accompanied the award at the event to mark the 10th Anniversary celebration of the college stated: “As an academic you contributed extensively in the design of programmes on international health while a Morehouse School of Medicine and Clark Atlanta University in Atlanta, USA. You have written extensively on maters concerning development in Africa including health systems, malaria and HIV/AIDS. In particular, you have written about brain drain in Africa and its effect on health systems development.

You were the Minister for Health of the Republic of Ghana for a year, February 2000 to January 2001. In that short space of time, you grasped the need to provide the people of Ghana with the specialist expertise required for ensuring efficient healthcare delivery. Convinced of the efforts of your predecessors, you took the bold step of inaugurating the “Taskforce Responsible for Establishing a National Postgraduate Medical College”.

For the passion you bring to public service, your devotion to teaching and learning, and your leadership role in the establishment of this College, the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons is proud to admit you as an Honorary Fellow.”

In his brief remarks, the High Commissioner expressed gratitude to the college for the honour done him. He promised to contribute his quota to the growth of the college and the country in general.

However, Prof. Danso-Boafo later stated that the credit for which he was being recognized, should rather go to the original members of the Task Force on the establishment of the college, especially its chairman and current President of the College, Prof. Dr. Dr. Sir George W. Brobbey.

The Guest of Honour for the occasion was the Chairman of the National Development Planning Commission (NDPC) Mr. Paul Victor Obeng who represented President John Dramani Mahama who was in South Africa attending former President Nelson Madiba Mandela's funeral.
