Former chairman of Performing Musicians Employers Association of Nigeria, (PMAN) Rivers state chapter, Lexy Mueka (a.k.a Lexy M) has congratulated the newly elected chairman of the association, Ibitoru Green (a.k.a Lady IB) and her newly elected executives for emerging victorious at the just concluded October 7th elections held at Legacy hall, urging them to remain focused and committed to their duties and stand firm against detractors whose stock in trade is to bring the association down..
Lexy M who made this assertion while speaking to newsmen in government house Port Harcourt observed that against previous elections, the recent election was not only democratically conducted but was also the most constitutionally conducted PMAN elections in history.
He took a swipe at anyone daring to challenge the well conducted election describing such persons as regressive and desperate; especially the non-registered members who he observed come in to create confusion when they have no business in the association.
Advising the lady IB led new administration; he said leadership start from the day you were elected into office urging Lady IB and his exco to always remain firm and resolute in piloting the affairs of the union. He however acknowledged the challenges posed by those claiming to be godfathers to every elected or appointed chairman of the association, adding that their claims that these chairpersons wouldn't have emerged without their input is a decoy to always a stake in whatever fund that comes into the coffers of the association.
He condemned the activities of these self acclaimed stakeholders, elders and godfathers whom he said has continued to hold the association to ransom. The piano maestro advised lady IB to ignore all their entreaties and manipulations and concentrate on the objective of the office she and her executives were elected to pilot..
Similarly lexy M has urged the new PMAN chairperson to carry her executive members and the general house along in policy formulation and decision making to pave way for broader vision, accountability and an all inclusive government.
'For the elders and patrons, they are free to make suggestions, contribute, intervene and call the executives to order where they feel they are falling short of expectation but not to hijack the function of the democratically elected exco or create a parallel body; I do not expect Lady IB and her executives to fall prey to certain elders, past and intending leaders among others who has continued to hold the union spell bound to their whims and caprices and whose only hope of survival is sharing from every penny donated to the association for effective running and execution of projects” he averred..
Lady IB must not be selective in relating to her executive members, she must realize that they were all democratically elected on different capacities and she must close ranks with them to achieve expected goal.
Speaking about challenges, the MD/CEO of Lexy M concept said the biggest challenge he foresees for the newly elected executives will be from certain past chairpersons and few elders who will be expecting financial gratification and feedbacks from moves by the exco to raise fund. According to him, these persons feel they've given their all to the association and industry in the past and must be consulted and compensated by taking a chunk of every money coming into the association's coffers because every new executive is seen as their ladder for survival.
Lexy who condemned this group of persons lamented that this was the reasons for the unending fractionalization of the state PMAN, and why people elected into the exco are unable to embark on any productive project. He frowned at situation where funds meant for meaningful projects are shared among dare devil hungry stricken acclaimed stakeholders at the detriment of the association saying this must henceforth stop.
The former chairman stressed the need for all members to put hands on deck to ensure that the IB led leadership survives, stressing that stringent measures must be put in place to stop those that has swore to continue to plunder the association and render her permanently retrogressive.
“First we must make frantic effort to redeem the already battered image of the association; the executives must be grossly accountable to the general house and not to any single selfish individual. They must have an operational base were members and the general public can access them and stop operating from their personal houses” he advised.
Lexy disclosed that information rules the world and therefore advised the new leadership to make themselves conspicuous.. “One of the ways to do this is to re-open the association's website which was very functional during my rule but was abandoned and allowed to go down because successive self acclaimed leaderships never saw it as important” he said, and also advocated for an operational bank account for the association to pave way for transparency and accountability.
He said a leader accountable to its followers earns immediate trust and respect recalling that he opened one for the union with FCMB during his tenure and said the account is still waiting to be reclaimed.
Lastly, he advised the newly elected executives to disregard the already factionalized elders council and go ahead to create an Advisory Council. This according to him will check the excesses of the elders and wake them up to their expected roles in the association.
“It is rather confusing and a duplication of offices when you consider that the self instituted elders council has a chairperson and the Rivers state PMAN also has a chairperson. The situation creates room for unnecessary power tussle as we are left to wonder who amongst them will take orders from each other when ordinarily the chairman elected by congress takes precedence”.
“Lady IB should have it in mind that most of her decisions won't go down well with some persons and this will provoke the usual unconstitutional plot for her carefully orchestrated impeachment. She must stand tall and rule out the word FEAR out of her dictionary, luckily a greater percentage of members are getting more and more acquainted with the association's constitution, meaning that the era of kicking out elected executives at will, shall be a thing of the past.
For the entire membership he urged them to give the new executive all required assistance to succeed and reposition the union.
