Kumasi, March 26, GNA - Five suspected members of the criminal gang that for two days running, brazenly took to the streets and fired sporadic gunshots to frighten people in Kumasi, have been arrested by the police.
They are now being held at the Kumasi Central Police Station.
Their names were given as Issahaku Mumuni, Aminu Sulemana, alias 'Jailman', George Baffour Awuah alias 'Bawal', Emmanuel Opoku Awuah alias 'Gaddafi' and one Jemima, the girlfriend of Jailman.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Augustine Gyenning, Ashanti Regional Commander, told a press briefing that three of the suspects were arrested in their hideout in Accra
He said all the suspects had confessed to committing various robberies in the Kumasi Metropolis, adding that a locally manufactured pistol and four 'AA' live cartridges were seized from Jemima.
The Regional Police Commander insisted that the intention of those who went on the indiscriminate shooting spree was not to rob people but to cause confusion and insecurity. They were believed to have been organized by some people.
DCOP Gyenning would not give any further details except to say that the 'world would soon know those behind that cowardly act in the Metropolis'.
He said the police would go after the other members of the gang who are on the run.
The police had impounded 105 unregistered motorbikes and 138 bags of dried leaves suspected to be cannabis in their fight to rid the metropolis of criminals.
Meanwhile, a prime suspect in the murder of the 13-year-old boy at Abuakwa about two weeks ago has also been nabbed.
Abraham Akwasi Agyei, according to DCOP Gyenning, had confessed to the crime, claiming that the deceased's mother owed him GH¢ 350.00 and that was why he decided to kill the woman and her children.
He would soon be put before court to answer for his crime. GNA
