Accra, March 20, GNA - Metro Mass Transit (MMT) has received the International Transport Award for serving its clientele efficiently.
Mr Maxwell Awuku, Acting General Manager told newsmen in Accra on Tuesday that against all odds MMT has received recognition beyond the borders of Ghana and Africa.
The company has been invited to receive the award trophy from May 19- May 21 in Madrid, Spain and will allow the company to become a member of Globe Trade Leader's Club and contract more than 7,000 associated companies from 95 countries.
Mr Awuku said the award represents the assertion of MMT corporate image to her clientele, as well as a unique opportunity to establish contact and professional relations with participants from 30 countries.
He said Management is working assiduously to ensure that 324 routes across the country are operated whilst all districts would enjoy MMT bus services.
Last year MMT self financed the acquisition of 150 new buses.
'MMT has since 2009 been making significant profits, the first in many years that such a breakthrough has emerged , a clear proof that MMT is surviving,' he said.
Meanwhile a statement issued by the company says it has received approval to review it fares upwards with immediate effect, due to the recent fuel price hike in the country.
It said by its mandate, MMT charges comparatively lower fares for the benefit of the poor with a view to influence and stabilise transport fares.
Intra-city fare is up by 10 per cent while urban inter-city service attracted 10-20 per cent increase.
The statement said plans are afoot to stem the tide of ticket malpractices and indiscipline among some personnel of the company.
MMT was borne out of the need for an organisation to provide a mass public transit service for the people, to ensure social and economic development.
It has 16 national depots, a workforce of 4,800 and 1,046 buses.
