Who is Dr. Kabu Okai Davies?

Accra, Aug. 27, GNA - Dr. Kabu Okai- Davies was born in Ayalolo a suburb of Accra on 21st March 1960.

His father is the late Kofi Davies, a diplomat under the Nkrumah, Ankrah and Busia administration.

Dr Kabu Okai- Davies is the Conventions People Party (CPP) parliamentary aspirant for Korle Klottey Constituency in Accra, in the upcoming elections in December.

He had his secondary education at the St Augustine's Senior High School in Cape Coast and took his undergraduate studies in Political Science, Sociology, Philosophy and Literature at the University of Ghana.

He served as organizing secretary for the Ghana Association of Writers and travelled to England in the mid eighties where he became a member of the Wands worth Writers Club and read his poetry at various writers' societies.

Dr. Davies migrated to the United States in 1988 and founded the African Globe Arts & Entertainment Corporation. Author of numerous plays including “ In Another Man's Name”, “Home Away From Home”, “One Day in The Life Of a Coloured Maid”, “The Daughters of Le Rio –Jones”, “Africanus the King” and “ Exile and the King's Rainbow.

He worked as a resident producer at the Newark Symphony Hall and toured with shows along the East Coast of America and at the Crossroads Theater in New Brunswick, New Jersey and to the 14 Street Theater in Atlanta.

Dr. Davies worked with the New Jersey Performing Arts Centre- Theater Academy and Arts Horizons. He has lectured widely and taught courses in African Cinema, creative writing and Independent Film Production at Drew University, Seton Hall University, University of Toronto, The New Jersey Governor's School and the New School for Social Research University (New York) in the 90's.

While in America, Okai-Davies studied Theater Arts at Rutgers University in Newark, NJ and Film Production and Cinema Studies at the New York University School of Continuing Education.

He has travelled widely in West Africa, Europe, then to Russia, Japan, Vietnam, and to China to promote cultural exchange and awareness programs.

The highlight of his career was the presentation of his play “When A Man Love's A Woman” at the 2005 Multicultural Festival at the Street Theater, in Canberra. In 2006 Kabu Okai-Davies moved to Australia where he lived with his wife Pauline and their two children.

In Australia he worked as the Manager of the Theo Notaras Multicultural, Aboriginal and Torres Straits Islander Centers and also took on the position as Festival Director and Producer of the National Multicultural Festival in Canberra, ACT.

Okai-Davies holds a Bachelor of Philosophy – Honours from the University of Canberra, where he also graduated with a Graduate Diploma in Professional Writing and also completed a Master of Creative Writing at the University of Canberra.

He also holds a double Post-Graduate Certificate in Creative Writing and Political Science at Oxford University – School of Continuing Education, Exeter College – Oxford, England.

Additionally, Kabu Okai-Davies holds a Master of Graduate Studies from the Australian National University and a Graduate Certificate in Professional Arts Management from Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology - University.

Early this year, Kabu Okai-Davies successfully defended his doctoral thesis in Creative Communications, meeting all the requirements for a Doctor of Philosophy in Communications with the University of Canberra in Australia. Currently Kabu Okai-Davies is pursuing a second doctorate in Political Science with the University of New South Wales at the Australian Defence Force Academy.

He is working on two novels “The Cloud Hunters” & “Twilight of the Generals” and a two plays “Second Marriages” and “My Invented Country”.

He directed “The Australian Nativity Story - A Musical” at the Playhouse Theater in December 2008 and also directed a new play “The Followers” for the Street Theater in May 2007, in Canberra, Australia. His first book, “The Long Road to Africa” was published in November 2010 and his next book of poetry “Symphony of Words” will be out by the end of the year.

In January 2011, Kabu Okai-Davies went to Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates, to accompany his wife, who is serving a three year tour of duty as First Secretary for the Australian Embassy Department of Foreign Affairs. In September 2011, Kabu Okai-Davies relocated to Ghana, and took up the position of Director of the Centre of Creativity and Innovation Studies.

He currently works at the African University College of Communications where he teaches as a Senior Lecturer in Creative Writing, African Philosophy, Development Studies, Biography Studies and African Studies.

Dr. Davies is an Adjunct Professor at the Graduate School of Governance and Leadership, teaching courses in Policy Studies, Political Communications, Leadership Studies and Political Sciences, Accra, Ghana.
