WASHINGTON (AFP) - US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton left Tuesday on a new whirlwind trip, this time a six-nation, 11-day swing through Africa which will take in troubled South Sudan as well as Ebola-hit Uganda.
The US top diplomat departed Tuesday from Andrews Air Force base heading first to Senegal where she will meet with President Macky Sall.
But a likely highlight of the tour, which will also include stops in Kenya, Malawi and South Africa, will be a meeting with 94-year-old former South African president and democracy icon, Nelson Mandela.
Clinton was leaving the United States two weeks after a trip to Europe, Asia and the Middle East, which saw her add two more countries to her tally, meaning she has visited a record-breaking 102 nations as secretary of state.
Her trip to Juba, the capital of South Sudan, the world's newest nation, will add yet another notch on her belt.
