Samia Yaba Nkrumah beaming with smiles hours before the election

Daughter of Ghana's first President, Dr Kwame Nkrumah and CPP's only Member of Parliament for the Jomoro constituency, Samia Yaba Nkrumah has been declared winner in the chairmanship race of the party.

Certified results by the Electoral Commission confirmed that Samia Nkrumah who had the support of the CPP big wigs polled 1,151 votes, incumbent chairman Ladi Nylander had 353, former Chairman Edmund Delle managed 332 and Madam Araba Bentsi-Entsil had 10 votes.

By this feat, Samia Nkrumah, the only CPP Member in Parliament, becomes the first woman to become chairman of the party, and the first woman chairman of a political party in the history Ghana.

For the General Secretary position, incumbent Ivor Greenstreet was maintained by the delegates beating Nii Armah Akomfrah and Ekow Duncan.

Mr Ivor Greenstreet polled 716 votes, Nii Armah Akomfrah polled 627 votes and Ekow Duncan polled 471 votes.

The position of National Treasurer was taken by Seth Gomnah, who beat incumbent Kosi Dede by 1005 votes to 853 polled Dede.

Mr Abu Forgor had 1093 votes to become the party's National Organiser, Evelyn Alamisi Anabilla had 347 votes, and Appiah Amankwah polled 408 votes.

Madam Mary Ankumah Boakye-Boateng was elected the National Women's Organiser with 917 votes, Hajia Hamdatu Ibrahim-Haruna 635 votes, and Aisha Suley Futa 313 votes.

Finally, Murtala Mohammed had 802 votes to become the National Youth Organiser, Francis Opai Tetteh had 186 votes and Issifu Kadiri Abdula Rauf 570 votes.

Altogether, over 20 candidates contested for the various positions of the party with over 2,000 delegates across the country taking part in the congress held at the International Trade Centre, Accra.
