Northern Colleges of Education Governing Councils Inaugurated

AS PART of effort to promote and project educational development and enrolment in the three Northern regions, government has inaugurated 13 members each as Board of Governing Councils of the three Colleges of Education in the Northern Region.

The Colleges include the Bimbila Evangelical College of Education (Bimbico), Bagabaga College of Education (Batco) as well as the Tamale College of Education (Tatco.

While the Tamale College of Education has Alhaji Hudu Yahaya, National Vice Chairman of the ruling National Democratic Congress as its Board Chairman, the Bagabaga College of Education can boast of Dr. Yahuza Gomda as the Board Chairman.

Mr. Adam Marshal is the Board Chairman for the Bimbila Evangelical Presbyterian College of Education and some members of the various boards are Mr. Abdulai Abu-Wemah, Bimbila E.P College Principal, Hajia Abiba Alhassan, Dr. Abdul G. Nasar, Dari Alhassan, Michael Abdulai Akor, Addico Tetteh Issac, Madam Dalla Memunatu Mumuni, Madam Doris Yani and Mr. Iliasu Adam among others.

Swearing the Council members into office at the Tamale College of Education, Mr. Moses Bukari Mabengba, Northern Regional Minister said the constitution of the Council was borne out of government's resolve to improve teacher education in the country.

He reminded them of their core responsibility to determine human centered programmes that will be required of the Colleges at improving the wellbeing of Ghanaians in line with the Better Ghana Agenda.

Mr. Mabengba spelt out the core functions of the Councils that comprised overseeing the internal organization of the various Colleges including the establishment, variation and supervision of academic divisions, departments and facilities of the three colleges in the region.

The regional Minister further tasked them to prescribe the terms and conditions of the admissions into the Colleges and institute awards, fellowships and scholarship schemes in furtherance of the aims of the Colleges.

Alhaji Hudu Yahaya, the Tamale Training College Board Chairman on behalf of his colleagues assured government of their determination to live beyond reproach in the conduct of their duties.

For his part, Alhaji Yakubu Bukari, Principal of the Tamale College of Education pledged that Principals of the three Colleges in the northern Region will cooperate and support the Council members to function effectively.

He however appealed to the newly sworn in Council members to add their voice to calls on government to fast track the passage of the College of Education bill into law by Parliament which in his estimation will accelerate the development of the nation's Colleges to full tertiary status.
