Reading clubs formed in Savelugu to improve education

Savelugu (N/R), June 18, GNA - Some Model Reading Clubs have been formed in ten communities of the Savelugu/Nanton District of the Northern Region, to encourage reading and learning and to improve upon the falling standards of education in the area.

The clubs were formed by the Child Reach International, an NGO operating in the area, in collaboration with the Academy for Educational Development-Ghana, under the Grant Reporting and Accountability Improve Literacy Programme (GRAIL).

The clubs comprise students from primary two to Junior High Schools, community members, teachers and circuit supervisors, while books and learning materials had also been supplied to each of the ten clubs by the NGOs.

Mr. Steven Yaw Manu, GRAIL Chief Advisor, addressing teachers and circuit supervisors of the clubs during a three-day refresher workshop, said the clubs were formed to help improve their pedagogical skills, and as part of improving reading and learning, the clubs were formed.

He said the reading clubs had been formed on the backdrop that some students in the area complete their Junior High school education without being able to read or write, adding that, the situation could be improved if the reading clubs were taken seriously.

Mr. Frederick Sarfo, Country Director of Child Reach International, explained that the purpose of the reading clubs was to give teaching skills on phonics to teachers, which they would intend impact to pupils to help them read and write.

He said the NGO was committed to helping to improve the quality of education in the Savelugu/Nanton District, adding that already, 70 volunteer teachers had been engaged by the NGO to teach in various schools of the district.

The District Chief Executive for the Savelugu/Nanton District, Mr Prince Askia Mohammed, commended the NGOs for their efforts, which had come to complete government's effort at bringing quality education to all.

He appealed to members of the club to abide by the instructions guiding the clubs, to enable them ripe the benefits of it.
