Managing Editor of the Insight Newspaper Kwesi Pratt Jnr has distanced his paper from an alleged smear campaign against Nana Akufo-Addo, the New Patriotic Party flagbearer in the 2008 elections.
His newspaper and that of Raymond Archer's Inquirer have been accused by the Nana Akufo-Addo campaign team as purveyors of fabricated reports targeted not only at denting the image of the New Patriotic Party 2008 presidential candidate but to sow seeds of discord within the party.
The two papers earlier this week published stories alleging that Nana Akufo Addo handed over to the Attorney General “damaging documents” which may lead to the prosecution of Mr. Alan Kyerematen.
Akufo-Addo has unequivocally denied any such ploy to have his compatriot prosecuted saying he has no influence on the Attorney General.
He found the allegations spurious and a calculated attempt by the two news papers and their political allies in the NDC to sow seeds of conflict in the NPP.
But Kwesi Pratt says his paper cannot be accused of peddling falsehood.
He told Joy News his paper “acted professionally” and reported accurately allegations that the NPP flag-bearer is conniving with the Attorney General to have his presidential contender, Alan Kyeremanten prosecuted for misappropriation.
The ace journalist said "serial callers" and "foot soldiers of the National Democratic Congress" publicly made the allegations and all his paper did was to report the allegations truthfully.
Even though he admitted that the allegations may well be a ploy by NDC loyalist to sow seeds of discord in the NPP, the information from serial callers cannot be discarded because they (serial callers) are well connected, he said.
Mr. Pratt said his paper was even more convinced about the allegation after an NDC official disclosed on Joy FM's news analysis programme News File on Saturday that Alan Kyeremanten could be heading for court.
He said he published the story after the two personalities and their spokespersons declined to comment on the matter.
In any case Mr Alan Kyeremanten is so important a personality that any allegation made against him must receive attention, he noted.
