One person is feared dead after being swept away by floodwaters at Klagon following a heavy downpour that hit parts of Accra on Sunday, June 7, leaving several communities submerged and disrupting vehicular movement.
The incident has raised renewed concerns about flooding in the capital during the rainy season. A vehicle was also reportedly carried away after the River Klagon overflowed its banks due to the intense rainfall.
The overflowing river submerged nearby roads and a bridge in the area, creating hazardous conditions for motorists and residents. Fast-moving waters covered sections of the bridge, making it difficult for drivers to gauge the depth before attempting to cross.
Officials of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) have been alerted and are mobilising to assess the situation and support emergency response efforts.
Speaking to Channel One TV’s Jude Duncan, NADMO Deputy Director-General in charge of Operations, Teddy Addi Safori, confirmed the development and said teams were being deployed to the area.
“We received a call from the municipal director for Klagon that the River Klagon had overflowed onto the bridge and most vehicles were going through without knowing it was very deep and so it swept one vehicle away and so right from here, we will rush there,” he said.
