KIA tightens measures to check Swine Flu

Accra, Aug. 11, GNA - Health authorities at the Kotoka International Airport (KIA), have tightened measures to control the spread of the Influenza A (H1N1) (Swine Flu), following two reported cases of the disease in the country.

The cases, which have not resulted in any fatalities, were reported in the capital city, Accra , and Takoradi in the Western region.

Speaking with the Ghana News Agency on Monday, KIA Port Health officials said, although they had not confirmed any case of the disease at the airport, they have been very vigilant in their inspection duties especially on in-coming passengers who might be carrying the virus.

They said since it was difficult to tell who might be carrying the virus unless showing symptoms, several fliers and posters educating people on the flu have been circulated at the airport.

"This would help people to know what to do in case they are suddenly confronted with any situation concerning the flu," the officials said.

The educative materials advise people to report any influenza-like illness to the nearest health facility, avoid close contact with people who appear unwell or have fever and cough, wash their hands with soap and water thoroughly and often, as well as use tissue to dispose off respiratory secretions.

In-coming passengers as well as all those who find themselves at the arrival hall of the airport have also been advised to report to the Port Health desk, located at the arrival hall if they experienced any flu-like symptoms.

The outbreak of Swine flu in Mexico , the United States of America and Canada , has now spread to over 79 countries worldwide with over 140 deaths.

Symptoms of include fever, cough-sneezing, fatigue, body aches, headaches, chills, sore throat, vomiting and diarrohoea.
