Research published indicates that 13 million abortions are carried out each year in China. Researchers believe the real figure could be higher, as there are many abortions done at unregistered clinics. Young single women between age 20 to 29 are most likely to have abortions in a country where there are 20 million births each year.
China imposed strict family planning rules in the 1970s in an attempt to limit the growth of its population. Many pregnant women, who have their full quota of children, have abortions to prevent unwanted births. A Professor at the Peking University Li Ying, said sex education must be strengthened in Universities and the society, to prevent unwanted pregnancies.
